2013 – The beginning…

January 2, 2013 by little hurdles big race

It sounds corny but two + years ago, sometime in April 2010 – I decided to change my life.  With all I have accomplished I’m still not telling you my weight – then or now.  HA HA!  However, we can talk dress sizes if you like.  I went from a size 36 to now a size 14…sometimes 16.

What made you decide to start?  Did you have a trainer?  Did you have surgery?  I don’t have that kind of willpower.   I hate the gym.  I love food too much to do that.

These are some of the questions & comments I get most often.

I don’t know why I decided to start – I just made a small goal that became a big goal.  Maybe I got tired of never having my picture taken, tired of wearing old lady clothes, tired of being out of breath walking up one flight of stairs, or was I tired of being unhappy.  No, I didn’t have a trainer – but I did have and still have someone who asks me everyday what I did at the gym.  It is someone who’s advice has had a great contribution to my success and someone I can’t lie to – guilt is a powerful tool for me.  No, I didn’t have surgery. Yes, you do have the willpower to make a change.  Size 36 and self-control are not synonyms.  I hated the gym too – now after I work out…I actually love the gym.  Oh boy do I ever love food…

So why the blog?  2012 has seen a stall in my progress.  I am hoping that being accountable to writing, what I hope will be funny and hopefully inspiring stories, that I’ll get back on track.  Also, the other day a friend/co-worker asked my advice on some workout equipment.  Later I started thinking…”What the crap just happened?  Someone asked me for advice of working out?”  So, while I have done a lot of things the wrong way, some things the correct way, and had many people offering silent support the whole way – I thought I would put it out there for anyone who needs any level of support for anything they decide to change in their life.

Your goal should be viewed as little hurdles along the way.  Make your goal to the finish line a series of steps – one less cigarette, refuse your usual dessert today, drink water instead of diet soda, walk around the block, tackle that piece of equipment you have been afraid of at the gym, slowly start moving organic products into your life, ride that roller coaster.  Whatever you decide to change in your life I will tell you this…You have the strength and I believe in you.

Me?  I’ve still got a goal I am moving towards.  But for now I am going to stop weighing myself everyday (this leads to a lot of frustration) and I am keeping a weight/measurement journal every Monday.  Measuring yourself helps you really see your progress better than just getting on the scale.

Today I went to the gym and did weight training on my lower body and abs.  I did 4.25 miles on the treadmill at a 10 incline for a total of 1026 calories.  I have been afraid of the stationary ab bench for two years and today I did 3 reps of 20 no problem.  See, little hurdles.

I’ve read a few blogs here and there but I’m looking forward to following yours. I just joined a fitness center and have a trainer to start off with because my knee is messed up and I’m old 🙂 but I want to be stronger. That’s stronger in every way. Thanks for sharing!

That’s great that you have someone to guide you though what will work for you & your knee. Make sure your trainer is really paying attention to your needs. You should find that as you get stronger your knee will too.
