A Day of Purging

January 13, 2013 by little hurdles big race

Today I purged a few things from my life. One as a start, one just for today, and one forever.

The weather today was fantastic and I got outdoors and did something I really love to do – I rode my bike. 17.5 miles to be exact on a local trail. I hadn’t really planned ahead although I new the weather was going to be spring like this weekend. Lucky for me a friend called and then we were off enjoying the great outdoors! I had thought about bike riding but I probably would have just gone ahead and gone to they gym, run around and done errands, and gone to a movie.

I also quit the Y today. 🙂 The girl at the desk seemed to be new and didn’t really try and push me to keep my membership – thank goodness.  When I walked out I couldn’t figure out why it had taken me so long to do it.

Riding the high from the day I went to my storage unit and brought a huge load of items back to my garage for storage/donations. I’ve had this storage unit since I lived in an apartment in a historic area. If you’ve ever had lived in an old home you know that means no closet space. I have one more load to get tomorrow and it is goodbye to AAAA storage.

So, I purged myself from the gym, at least for today. It shook up my workout and boy do I feel it right now. Riding an actual bike and riding a stationary bike have no comparisons. You workout not only your legs but your core and arms on a real bike. Make sure you grab these moments when you can – it will help our overall fitness by not only getting you out of your comfort zone but changing your muscle memory.

I also purged myself from the safety blanket of having two gyms.

Finally, I started to purge myself from my stuff. Your excess is a metaphor for your life. Why do you hang on to clothes, vases, styrofoam coolers, or tupperware you haven’t touched in years? What good is it doing for you in boxes? It’s not. It’s why I also clean my closet at least twice year. I have a certain number of hangers in my closet. While it is quite a few hangers…I don’t add any more, I remove clothes. This is a lesson I am learning with my stuff.  I do have a little bit of hoarder in me.  When I moved over a year ago I decided to make a clean slate.  Bright and clean and only what I need.   It’s also a lesson for what is in your cabinets. You don’t need a box of cookies just in case. Just in case of what? Purge yourself from temptation. There is Goodwill for your stuff and there is a Food Bank for your food.

Check the weather tomorrow and get outside if you can. It will probably be the best choice you make all day.
