Its Good to be #1

After several years bouncing around the list of America’s fattest cities Virginia Beach is finally #1 in something good.  We are the first city to sell out the Color Me Rad  race – and it is more than three months away.  The Miami race is in about 15 days and they still have spots.  GO VB!!!

I never figure out how they determine the fattest cities – but we are currently tied for 4th place with Columbus, Ohio.  For Virginia Beach – 28.5% of the population is obese, 12.6% of the population has diabetes, 52.4% of the population exercises frequently, and 60.1% of the population eats produce regularly.  What???  Eats produce regularly???  Do you realize that means that out of 100 people – 40 don’t regularly eat produce.  When you continue to break that down that means that out of 5 people – 2 don’t eat produce regularly.  That’s actually shocking don’t you think?  That’s quite a few people in your office who are not eating fruits and vegetables.  I’m not going to start a lecture on GMO’s or microwaved foods…at least right now.  But come on people eat a banana or some broccoli.  What’s really sad about this study is that the margins between the 10th city on the list and the 1st city on the list are very small.  Some are less than 2% points.  That says to me the margins between 20th and 1st are probably also pretty small.

But, VB I hope we are turning a corner.  Let’s keep it going and get off that list!

My Color Me Rad team is 6 members strong and I’m already excited.

  1. I did The Color Run when it came to Tulsa last year. It was so much fun!

  2. Lisa K says:

I’ve noticed that the majority of people around here are fat. I sat in the parking lot the other day before going into a department store and about 80% of the people walking by were overweight. They were mostly women and they had the same body type, mostly heavy in the middle.

  3. Pam Getty says:

Even I eat bananas and broccoli.

  4. Farmer says:

Doesn’t surprise me and the world we’re living in rewards the immediate consumption of fat and sugar. And it’s in everything and everywhere . Takes way too much thought and will power to eat something grown. Too bad for us. Thought I was just seeing it in Los Angeles but it’s a problem everywhere.
