Shamed

It’s been a whirlwind of the last week and a half with a work conference and guests. So, I apologize for the lag in my blog. I still continue to get so many positive comments from so many people, I’m overjoyed that you are reading, following, and being so incredibly supportive.
I’m no excuses – even though I just made one for not keeping up to date with my blogging. So as I sit here at the RealScreen conference holding a couch…I write.
About a week ago my area was slammed with really bad weather. I think we had four days of absolutely freezing rain. The kind of weather you don’t want to leave the house – much less go to the gym. You know those thoughts that run through your mind…I’ll have to wear a coat & then what do i do with it at the gym, I don’t have a lock, someone will steal my coat, I’ll catch a cold being sweaty and making the trek back to the car. Don’t worry I’ve got all the excuses you need.
So there I was sitting in my car, dressed for the gym and trying to find an even better reason not to go when I saw out my side window this bright light bobbing down the sidewalk. I’ll remind you it is pouring down rain and it is about 35 degrees at 7pm. As the light passes under the street lights this mass of reflectors would shine on and off. I then realized in shock that it was a runner, but not just any runner, it was my elderly neighbor. I would guess conservatively he’s about 60 years old. Through the summer and fall I would always see him out – but this was different. Clad with a headlight, a poncho, and a reflective vest – he was out there doing what he clearly loves – running.
…and here I am sitting in my car with my seat warmers blasting and trying desperately to convince myself that today is not a good day for the gym. I was shamed.
I’ve always heard that real runners have such a passion for the sport, it’s something explosive in them that needs to be let out. I’m not sure if he was just tired of being stuck inside, he’s training for a marathon, or he’s just that determined to exercise. Either way, I put my car in gear and we t to the gym. I think about him every time I start to make an excuse or feel like I don’t have enough time. Of course the a gym cycle is the best, but any amount of exercise is good for you, just get out there and grab your opportunity.
It could be worse, you could be running in the rain.
